Gerlinde Costiff. A beautiful woman. A sensational dresser. She was very kind and always took time to talk to me, and offer advice in her wonderfully, bonkers German accent. I looked up to her and adored her. My favourite snippet of advice from her was: “never wear purple to a nightclub. It looks grey”. She died suddenly in 1994.

Ray Petri. Father of Buffalo Style.

I met Ray in my late teens. He liked my look; an interpretation of Sade and Japanese menswear cobbled together via second hand warehouse Flip and Kenny Market Mecca Johnsons with oversized men’s shirts from Joseph Pour La Maison. He encouraged me to embrace my androgynous Sloaney Pony Knightsbridge tropes rather than fight them. Having said that he got me back into wearing dresses, floaty destroyed tea ones with army boots or Alaïa vest minis. He took time to chat. He was taken too soon by AIDS.”
